Acharya Prashant responds to a question about why, despite thousands of videos on religion and spirituality, the world is still full of sin, suffering, war, and depression. He explains that there are two kinds of religion: the one that was given and the one that you have made of it. The religion that was given was as clean and pure as the verses of the Rishis. The religion that you have created is quite different. The speaker clarifies that the popular version of religion, which most people follow, has not been ableto solve these problems because it is busy with other things. He gives several examples of what this popular religion is concerned with: whether to shave one's head or not, what color clothes to wear (yellow or white), which direction to face while eating, making snakes fly, pouring quintals of milk on idols, and superstitions about ghosts, spirits, and exorcism. This religion is busy with foolishness. It is concerned with which caste is superior to another, and which castes should be kept at a distance from the village. When religion is entangled in such issues, how can it provide answers to life's real problems? Acharya Prashant states that the spirituality prevalent among the general populace does not even confront the fundamental questions of what depression is and what its solution is, or where war comes from and how to end it. Instead, spirituality is busy with making snakes fly or determining how many quintals of milk to pour on an idol. He points out that religious leaders (Dharmagurus) have played a significant role in ruining religion. The common people have been naive, believing anyone with a long white beard who speaks in Sanskrit. The criteria for being religious have become about following traditions, superstitions, and foolishness, such as fasting on a particular day (Ekadashi). Religion, which could have been an infinite source of strength, has been turned into a burden. When religion is preoccupied with such trivial matters, it cannot provide solutions to the world's real problems.
