Description

Acharya Prashant explains that when scriptures state that one is not the body or the mind, it is not intended for the listener to simply start repeating those statements as a new belief. The purpose of such teachings is to encourage self-inquiry and to prompt individuals to question their deeply held convictions. He notes that it is natural for people to strongly identify with their bodies, thoughts, and emotions, and it is dishonest to suddenly claim a state of spiritual realization overnight after reading a book. True spiritual progress requires a long and honest process of investigation, experimentation, and testing of one's own experiences. He emphasizes that it is dangerous to prematurely adopt the identity of the soul or the supreme self. It is far more harmful to falsely believe 'I am Brahman' based on intellectual study than to simply admit to being an ordinary person identified with the body and mind. One should remain in a state of curiosity and continue to observe how the mind operates, rather than jumping to conclusions. Acharya Prashant advises that for a long time, one should honestly acknowledge their identification with the body while continuing the process of questioning, as the state where such questions cease only comes much later through genuine practice.
