Acharya Prashant explains that spiritual contemplation is a distinct and specific category of thought, different from ordinary mental activity. While the mind is biologically and socially conditioned to think about the external world, it has no inherent reason to turn inward. The mind is naturally a subject that seeks objects in the world, such as people, things, and events. This outward-looking nature is shared by both animals and scientists; while a scientist may study the material world with great sophistication, their gaze remains directed toward external matter, just like any other creature. In contrast, a sage or Rishi is one who turns their gaze inward to question the very source of perception and the existence of the observer.
